Scent Design | For Hospitality
The best hotel scent is the one guests barely notice at first. At Hīkishémé Botanicals, each signature scent begins with the place itself: its geography and environment, the architecture, the history of the building, and the spirit of its design. From there, I create a fragrance that belongs to that space and no other.
Every scent is made with tinctures from my own garden, developed over two years, and blended with high quality organic essential oils. The result is intentionally soft and unobtrusive. A guest may not catch it the first time they walk down a hallway. It might appear as a whisper of diffusion in the corridor or a lightly scented welcome towel, then return in the bath salts, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotions, soaps, scent mists, and candles. Each encounter is gentle, and together they become a memory of the stay that guests often want to take home with them.
Scent does more than please us. Research shows that "the sense of smell plays an important role in the physiological effects of mood, stress, and working capacity." For this reason, designers of shops, hotels, and other commercial interiors have embraced olfactory branding, the use of a unique, mood boosting scent that guests come to associate with the experience of a specific brand or space.

At The Westman in Bend, I created Obsidian, a signature scent of cedarwood atlas, sandalwood, and oakmoss with an oregano tincture, designed to settle into the space rather than announce itself.
"I wanted to capture the scent of Central Oregon, but I also wanted to include the entire region through the lens of Minnie and the routes she took."
